When you meet your local guide at the clinic in Sheung Wan, tour the facility for an introduction to this important element of Chinese culture. Discover the curious mixture of medicinal herbs stored within the apothecary cabinet. You’ll learn about the properties and uses of some of the more popular herbs, and find out what is involved in prescribing and preparing them.
Next, receive a private consultation with a qualified TCM practitioner. By examining your tongue, taking your pulse and temperature, and studying other indicators like complexion and muscle tone, the doctor identifies any imbalances in your body. In addition, a TCM nutritionist determines your body constitution and offers advice on how to rebalance yourself, including tips on foods to eat and any lifestyle changes needed to remedy your symptoms and strengthen your body.
Then choose one of four TCM treatments for your private session: acupuncture, cupping, guasha or herbal steaming.
Acupuncture uses fine (and pain-free) needles, inserted into key blood channels to stimulate the free flow of Qi, or energy, through your body. During cupping therapy, heated cups are placed on targeted parts of the body and pressure is applied to create suction so that toxins are released and blood flow is increased. Guasha, meaning ‘to scrape the skin,’ involves the use of a smooth flat object, like a spoon, to apply broad, scraping strokes to the body; this treatment can stimulate the immune system and relieve pain. Herbal steaming allows the body to absorb the benefits of medicinal herbs through steam, leaving you feeling cleansed and refreshed.
