Lantau Peak is the second highest peak (3064 feet) in Hong Kong and the highest point on Lantau Island. It is well-known for the sunrise scenery viewed from the summit. At the foot of Lantau Peak, you have a chance to see the largest outdoor wood carving in the world The Wisdom Path with The Heart Sutra written on it. The Heart Sutra is a treasured text revered by Confucians, Buddhists and Taoists alike. It is written in a simple and concise manner, yet its message is truly profound. At the end of the path is Tian Tan Buddha (Big Buddha), the second largest bronze Buddha in the world. It is also one of the best-known scenic spot in Hong Kong.
This hike is recommended for the sunrise but can also be done during day time. For the courageous ones who will hike Lantau Peak for the sunrise, a night bus must be taken to Tung Chung MTR station where you will meet your guide. Among other night buses, line N11 runs every 30 minutes from Central for example. This hike leaves Tung Chung between 3 and 4 AM (depending on the sunrise time) in order to ensure you can see the mesmerizing views of the Hong Kong sunrise.
Away from the crowds of the city center, you will experience in the darkness of the night, the sounds of the river rushing down the valley, the cool morning breeze brushing through the blades of grass, the yelp of the wild cows and buffalos, and the croaking of nearby frogs.
With the stars painted on to the sky, and pollution of the city nowhere to be found, your eyes will be lit up by prodigious sights such as a mountain range slashing through the sky, illuminated by the glow of the Hong Kong International airport.
After a more difficult climb, you will reach the top of Lantau Peak, the second highest mountain in Hong Kong, at over 930m. If the weather agrees, you will see a large part of Lantau Island, the northwestern area of the New Territories, as well as parts of Kowloon and Hong Kong Island.
Descending Lantau Peak, you will hike through the Wisdom Path, a series of 38 wooden steles (upright monuments) containing verses from the centuries-old Heart Sutra; one of the worlds best-known prayers revered by Confucians, Buddhists and Taoists alike. The hike concludes at Ngong Ping 360.
At Ngong Ping 360, we recommend you to visit both the Big Buddha statue as well as the Po Lin Monastery. Both of these are free of charge. From there, you can either explore the rest of Lantau Island some more, or take the bus or cable car back to Tung Chung MTR station.
