Travel back in time to the Hong Kong 1967 Leftist riots, when pro-communist tensions fueled by China’s Cultural Revolution sparked massive demonstrations in the city against British colonial rule. During this 2-hour walking tour, you’ll visit leftist strongholds such as schools, department stores and bookstores — sites of propaganda, protest and arrest — and learn about the violent uprising of labor unions and student groups that clashed against the Hong Kong Police Force. This small-group tour is limited to 12 people for a more personalized experience with a knowledgeable guide.

Meet your guide at the North Point MTR Station and follow on foot to historical sites of the Hong Kong 1967 Leftist riots, triggered by the Cultural Revolution in China. Throughout your tour, listen to a narrative of the conflict, which began after a labor dispute at an artificial flower factory and escalated into mass demonstrations across Hong Kong for seven months.
Starting on Sugar Street, cross the pedestrian bridge over King’s Road for an overview of North Point, a mixed-use urban area, and stop at Chekiang Primary School to discuss education and student protests at the former leftist stronghold.
Next, head to Qinghua Street, where two young children were killed in one of the many bombings that took place during the pro-communist riots. You’ll also visit a Chinese department store, site of an underground hospital where massive arrests were made by the Hong Kong Police Force. Imagine the propaganda billboards and storefront posters once painted with Maoist slogans.

Continue to a rooftop to listen to your guide describe the helicopter landing that led to more arrests, and visit a bookstore, another key meeting location for leftist school students and labor unionists.

When you reach Tsat Tsz Mui Road, you’ll ride a tram to Quarry Bay, located in the Eastern District of Hong Kong Island. Here, get a pulse on the local culture and glimpse the imposing Giant Mansions, a crumbling concrete building that includes 15 residential floors atop a 2-story tangle of restaurants, shops and businesses.
By the end of your tour, you’ll have learned about the social reforms that have taken place since the the 1967 riots. Feel free to ask your guide any more questions you have before saying goodbye at the Quarry Bay MTR Station.
